Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor PC Game Review and more

GameInfo: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is an action role-playing video game set in The Lord of the Rings universe, developed by Monolith Productions and released by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game takes place during the gap between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings saga and was released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
This game is from Warner Brother Games Studio, and it’s very clearly made by the same people who made the modern, highly enjoyable Batman video game series. Many of the games features are found in the Batman series; however, it doesn’t feel like a rip-off or copy of the series, but rather copying many of its strengths – like the skill trees, seeing through walls to identify opponents, free flow combat, and so forth – all while still incorporating new ideas for this game. This game stands on its own, from a storyline aspect...In other words, someone who is not a LOTR fan (such as myself) can still jump into the story and easily understand it.

Graphics and Gameplay:
I am running the graphics at 1920 X 1080 on custom – mostly low and medium quality settings – and the game still looks great! The graphics and combat gameplay are fluid and highly enjoyable. The free flow combat system (founded in the Batman series) removes the feel that you are using the same attack since the animations have a high degree of variety to include the execution/finishing moves. The gameplay is “open map” and you have a pretty high degree of choice in what missions you take on during the game.

RPG Mechanics:
In the game, you are able to use the skill tree to gain new, valuable, and potentially game changing skills. There is also a weapons upgrade system of adding “runes” to your weapons for special abilities. What’s really special about this system, although simple in understanding, is that the enemy leadership also can “rank up” in combat if you lost in combat against them. It’s a very simple notion, which is well played out in the game. Certain enemies have a weak constitution and can be interrogated to find out the weaknesses of the enemy leadership; this information can turn the combat in your favor.

Dialogue, Speech, and Character Interaction:
The studio did an amazing job of working out the character interaction and the production quality is wonderful. Short example: During a fight with a group of enemies, I encountered a Captain class enemy who crossed swords with me and threatened to destroy. (OK. Simple scripted dialogue, right?) So I retreated from battle and then rode back into combat less than a minute later on an animal you can control with a special skill. The camera zoomed in on the Captain who again was named, but then he addressed my cowardness and how my “pet” wasn’t going to be able to help me. The producers attention to detail had me amazed! That times time to think of special instances and variables in the programming and all the extra work that goes into these little things...I think that’s what makes this game great.

Overall, I highly recommend this game. If you are interested in a good story, solid third person swordplay, and feeling as though you are constantly accomplishing something and getting stronger (new skills and techniques) you will enjoy this gem of a game.
Verdict: 95/100
